DISCOVER HOW ATHLETES OVER 50 LEAD EXTRAORDINARY LIVES!

What does it take to continue to participate in athletic activities and sustained exercise later in life? How does it differ from managing these activities when you are in your 20’s or 30’s? Do you wonder if, or when, you have to give up your physical activities? You will be intrigued and inspired by the answers to these questions from Don McGrath’s book about 50 interviews of athletic people over 50 years old.

True stories from his spectacular interviewees will inspire you like no others. Many of McGrath’s subjects never imagined that they would be role models for exercise and good health. Still, by applying a common set of characteristics, they have broken remarkable mental and physical barriers to succeed. Peek into the lives of Linda Quirk who ran seven marathons on seven continents at age 55, and in 2010 plans to run across four of the world’s largest deserts; Sandy Scott, 69, who broke a vertebrae at age 65 and four years later won a state cycling 20k championship; or 75-year-old veteran tap dance Gene GeBauer.

With U.S. health concerns at the forefront, the athlete’s way of life helps us to understand how to take responsibility for our well being. Lessons learned from these interviews can help us avoid doctors’ offices, stave off diseases, and have more joy and contentment.

Topics Don will speak to include:

    “50,000 Athlete Challenge ”

“Health care – a novel approach to positively impact health care costs”
The 50 interviews Don conducted began to develop into a book that can be life altering.  It is Don’s belief that if someone commits themselves to doing these simple things can change truly change your life, regular exercise, association with people who share a common passion, awareness of the importance of good diet, and awareness of the importance of good physical health. Many of the athletes interviewed have not seen a doctor for other than regular physicals due to their healthy lifestyles.
“What master athletes know about staying healthy”
In the book, Don interviews Carol Jean Vosburgh, who is a 63 year old multisport athlete from Florida. She told him that one of her priorities is giving back through volunteer work, as well as by inspiring others to lead a healthy lifestyle. She lit the spark in Don to take some action and launching the 50,000 Active/Athlete Challenge. The goal of the challenge is to recruit 50,000 people to adopt some of the healthy habits he has seen in the athletes he interviewed. This is not limited to any age group, and we hope to include the very young to the very old. These habits are:
    – discover an activity they enjoy
    – have a written goal in that activity
    – have a written plan to reach the goal
    – have a means of holding themselves accountable to their plan
    – get out there, follow your plan, be accountable, and have fun
“Master athletes secrets to good health.”
Excerpt from Don’ Blog “A few weeks ago I was out for a run and thinking about a comment someone made to me the previous day about being “Over the hill.” I began thinking about what that meant and I got this visual of one long, steady hill that crests and then descends. The more I thought about this as an analogy to life, the more ridiculous it seemed. For me, and all the athletes that I interviewed, life is a 3-D landscape peppered with an incredible and diverse terrain. The thought of a steady climb and decent is ludicrous, for all but the most unfortunate.” In an interesting format, Don can interview a local athlete over 50 similar to what is done in the book – so that your audience can hear the stories, experiences and insight on the healthy aspects of an active lifestyle.
“Interviewing your way to success – why 50 interviews has changed my outlook.”
Each author of 50 Interviews, learns the truth about the challenges and the rewards that exist on the other side of achievement. Gain valuable advice from people who were once in the same shoes. If you don’t make that jump now, will you ever? If there has always been something stopping you, a fear in the back of your mind keeping you from achieving your dreams, these insights will show you a way to break free. The interviews shed light on what inspires and drives the ordinary, everyday hero. It is a collection of over 50 role models who inspire others and prove that anything is possible, providing timely mentoring to all who read their interview. These role models show by example that each of us has a gift to make a difference in our own unique way. 50 Interviews is a showcase of people living their dreams and enjoying the payoff that results from taking the leap in something they are truly passionate about. In Don’s case, it is athletes over 50 who continue to enjoy their good health through their passion for sports.

Do Athletes Over 50 Years of Age Hold the Key to Health Care reform?

In his just released book 50 Athletes Over 50 Teach Us to Live a Strong, Healthy Life, Author and Speaker Don McGrath shares his experiences and lessons learned from interviewing 50 athletes over 50 years of age from around the world. The athletes participate in a wide variety of activities including running and cycling to bodybuilding and even dance, and all are leading extraordinarily healthy lives.

“My goal in writing the book was to learn how to stay active and successful in my sport, rock climbing, for as long as possible,” says McGrath. “Along the way, I discovered that the athletes I was interviewing had a much more important tale to tell. They are all living spectacularly strong, healthy lives.” he adds.

Between the covers of McGrath’s book you will find insights that he gathered along his journey, humorous and touching stories from the athletes, written exercises to help you lead a stronger, healthier life, and commentary from world experts on our active and aging population. You will peek into the lives of Linda Quirk, who ran seven marathons on seven continents at age 55, and in 2010 plans to run across four of the world’s largest deserts; Sandy Scott, 69, who broke a vertebrae at age 65 and four years later won a state cycling 20K championship; and 75-year-old veteran tap dance Gene GeBauer. You will get insights from Nikola medic Ph.D., an expert in sports psychology, and hear from Vonda Wright M.D., Director of the Performance and Research Initiative for Masters Athletes at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center

“The intent of this book is to teach people in their thirties and beyond how they too can develop the habits I found in these extremely healthy athletes,” says McGrath. “I feel that the lessons these athletes shared with me can change people’s lives. With the kind of Healthy Reform these athletes practice, we would need less health care reform.”

Don will speak about athletes he interviewed from your area

Don interviewed athletes from Alaska, British Columbia, California, China, Colorado, Florida,  Georgia, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, The Netherlands. Don can share stories with you about each and every one of them, as well as special lessons they taught him.

What is the 50,000 Athlete Challenge?

As a result of seeing the incredible health of the over 50 athletes he interviewed, Don McGrath created the 50,000 Athlete Challenge, which has become the 50-k Active/Athlete Challenge. The goal of this challenge is to inspire 50,000 people to adopt some of the healthy habits Don saw in the athletes over 50. Find out more here

    5 myths about older athletes

In the course of completing 50 interviews Don uncovered truths that dispel commonly held myths about being active when you get older. One example is that some feel that older athletes are in it just for the fun. Oh, far from it. Don came across some extremely competitive spirits in his interviews, ones that he would not want to go up against, despite being many years their junior. Don will share the myths he uncovered.

A New Decade’s Resolution that will change your life!

One of the key lessons Don McGrath learned in interviewing 50 athletes over 50, is that they all have found a sport or physical activity that they absolutely love doing. They experience joy, by the very nature of moving their bodies in ways that feel good. Don’s proposal to the world as we enter a new decade, is to make finding your “active passion” your 2010 New Decade’s Resolution. Instead of flocking to the gym, working at controlling what you eat, or trying to shake a poor habit, why not do something much more fun? Don is convinced that once you discover your active passion, all the other good habits fall into place, almost naturally. Don will share with you examples from interviews with athletes over 50, as well as what you can do to find your active passion.

Over the Hill? … Which Hill?

Excerpt from Don’ Blog: “A few weeks ago I was out for a run and thinking about a comment someone made to me the previous day about being “Over the hill.” I began thinking about what that meant and I got this visual of one long, steady hill that crests and then descends. The more I thought about this as an analogy to life, the more ridiculous it seemed. For me, and all the athletes that I interviewed, life is a 3-D landscape peppered with an incredible and diverse terrain. The thought of a steady climb and decent is ludicrous, for all but the most unfortunate.”

In an interesting format, Don can interview a local athlete over 50 similar to what is done in the book – so that your audience can hear the stories, experiences and insight on the healthy aspects of an active lifestyle.

Emerge from Your mid-life crisis better than ever

In doing research for his book on masters athletes, Don found instances where the athletes he interviewed started exercising as a result of a mid-life crisis. Take Weia Reinboud, who as a result of a mid-life crisis, began participating in masters track and field. Today, Weia holds multiple age group world records, and is living a life she absolutely adores. In fact, it is a mid-life crisis that started Don on a journey that resulted in his becoming an author. Don will share this humorous story with you.

You have excuses for not exercising? Meet these people

Don will introduce you to Bill Hansbury who lost his leg to an aggressive infection at age 70, and now at age 72, is training to run the Boston Marathon. Don will tell the story of Maria Riquet, who has recovered from a near life-ending accident, and now is a 57 year old bodybuilder. Or Gerard Moreno, a paralympian fencer and down hill off-road wheelchair racer, who wishes everyone was as fortunate as he is.

Being Normal is Not Good Enough

The average American is overweight, and on a path to being an unhealthy older American. Over 66% of Americans are overweight and over 30% are obese. Chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease are on the rise. It doesn’t have to be this way. In many cases, these diseases can be avoided by living an active life. As a nation, we need to raise the bar for normalcy. Don will talk about Healthy Reform, which he believes should be discussed at the same level as health care reform.
